Four Basic Components of a Footwear Examination

Abstract

Footwear impression evidence examinations have been carried out and applied for forensic purposes for over 200 years. According to literature, footwear identification dates back to 1786 in Scotland. The first case was worked by a local police constable and according to the circumstances, it could be argued that anyone can observe footwear impression evidence, compare features, and make positive identifications. From this viewpoint, footwear impression examination would become a "supplemental" task to all other forensic duties performed by forensic examiners.
